Deep Frozen Ocean
minecraft:deep_frozen_ocean
Visit Deep Frozen Ocean for a gravel sea floor, open water between patches of ice, and ocean wildlife. Prepare for underwater travel; the frozen surface alone does not distinguish this biome from Frozen Ocean.
Find the exact biome
/locate biome minecraft:deep_frozen_oceanRequires cheats. Searches the current dimension; legacy definitions may not generate in your world.
Choose your destination
The sibling with the ordinary ocean height label. Compare the actual terrain at your destination.
Another deep ocean profile without the frozen tag or patchy-ice component.
The ordinary cold-ocean profile.
Why visit Deep Frozen Ocean
The gravel floor is a direct mining target, and patchy ice creates a mix of open water and solid footing. Inspect the depth at your proposed build site; the listed sea-floor depth is a guide, not an exact measurement for every coordinate.
It is also worth finding when a command, seed note, or add-on calls for the exact deep frozen biome. The name is a precise Bedrock ID, not a general label for any icy ocean.
Terrain and travel
Expect a gravel sea floor and patchy ice with open water between frozen sections, rather than one continuous sheet.
A boat works in the open lanes, but broken ice can interrupt a straight surface route. Prepare for a longer dive and inspect the local terrain before choosing a build site.
Mobs and structures
Mobs that can spawn here
- Polar Bear
The frozen-ocean spawn condition requires an ice block and light level 7–15.
- Drowned
The ocean rule spawns them underwater at light level 0–7 on Easy through Hard.
- Cod
Its rule accepts ocean biomes that do not carry the warm tag.
- Salmon
Its ocean condition also excludes only the warm tag.
- Squid
Its underwater surface condition matches the ocean tag.
Actual spawns still depend on height, light, difficulty, population caps, distance from the player, and a valid spawn block.
Structure limits
Finding this biome does not guarantee a monument, ruin, shipwreck, or buried treasure.
Use /locate structure with the structure's own ID when the structure is the goal. A biome lookup and a structure lookup answer different questions.
Resources
- Gravel
Look for it across the sea floor, then choose a depth you can mine safely.
- Cod and salmon
Both have natural ocean spawn conditions here and provide food when caught.
- Ink sacs
Squid use the ocean tag and can supply ink sacs.
How to find it
With cheats enabled, /locate biome is the reliable way to separate Deep Frozen Ocean from ordinary Frozen Ocean. The command returns the nearest matching biome if one exists in the current dimension.
In survival, patchy ice over an ocean and a gravel floor suggest the frozen family. These shared features do not prove which of the two frozen-ocean IDs you found.
Biome ID and command
/locate biome minecraft:deep_frozen_oceanThe namespace and underscores are part of the ID. The page URL uses hyphens; commands use minecraft:deep_frozen_ocean.
The locate command requires cheats and searches the current dimension. Use the same namespaced ID in Bedrock add-on data that asks for a biome identifier.
Limits and edition notes
- This page covers Bedrock Edition. Java Edition terrain and spawning can differ.
- The deep_ocean label does not promise one fixed water depth. Inspect the exact location before building.
- A biome match does not guarantee a structure or every possible sea-floor feature.
