Minecraft Bedrock v1.21.130.3: Nautilus Mobs, Spear Weapons, and Desert Riders
Two new combat systems landed at once, each tied to a specific biome. The ocean got an armored aquatic predator. The desert got a hostile raiding party that rides camels. Over 25 entities were touched to make room for them.
The Nautilus
The nautilus is the most complex new entity in this release. 906 lines. 15 HP, water-breathing, poison immunity, knockback resistance of 0.3. It hunts, swims, and can dehydrate on land.
What makes it unusual: full armor slots. Copper, iron, gold, diamond, and netherite nautilus armor, each craftable and upgradeable via smithing table. No other aquatic mob has worn armor. The zombie nautilus is its undead counterpart.
The axolotl finally has a rival in underwater combat. The nautilus hits for 3 damage with active hunt behavior, not the passive waiting of the drowned.
Spears
Seven tiers: wooden, stone, copper, iron, golden, diamond, netherite. A new weapon class with two novel components:
minecraft:piercing_weaponwith reach range 2.0 to 4.5 blocksminecraft:kinetic_weaponwith knockback conditions and dismount conditions
Reach of 4.5 blocks is significant. Swords cap at ~3. Spears also have swing_duration and cooldown mechanics, pointing to slower but longer-range combat. Enchantable in the melee_spear slot, tagged minecraft:is_spear.
All 7 are craftable. Metal variants smelt in furnaces. The netherite spear uses smithing upgrade. They appear in chest loot across bastion treasures, buried treasure, end cities, shipwrecks, underwater ruins, and village weaponsmiths.
Desert Raiders
Two new hostile mobs that work as a unit:
The parched is a ranged/melee hybrid. Out of water it shoots arrows (aux_val 35) with a bow. In water it switches to melee at 2 damage. Context-sensitive combat AI.
The camel husk is a hostile camel variant. Spawns in deserts on sand at night with spawn weight 25. It carries either a husk or parched as a rider. Has dash_action and is_saddled. Players can tame it (tempted with rabbit foot) and ride it via player_ride_tamed.
A hostile mob you can capture and ride. The camel husk turns the desert into a mounted combat zone at night, with archers shooting from saddled camels.
Entity Modifications
25+ existing entities received updates. The modified list reads like a zoo inventory: cat, cow, chicken, pig, sheep, wolf, horse, donkey, mule, spider, cave spider, phantom, skeleton, zombie, husk, drowned, ocelot, panda, mooshroom, piglin, trader llama, wither, zombie horse, zombie pigman, and zombie villager.
Loot Tables
New drop tables for all four new mobs. Rider equipment tables (drowned_rider_equipment, husk_rider, zombie_rider, zombie_rider_equipment) suggest the mount system extends beyond the camel husk. The drowned can now spawn as a rider too.
Spears were added to 7 existing chest loot pools. Underwater ruins and shipwrecks get them at higher weights, reinforcing the aquatic combat theme.
Spawn Rules
The camel husk spawns in desert biomes on sand blocks at night. Dolphin and drowned spawn rules were modified, likely to accommodate the nautilus’s presence in the same waters.
The Pattern
Two parallel combat systems, each with a dedicated biome, custom equipment, and new mob interactions. The ocean gets an armored predator and long-reach spears. The desert gets mounted raiders you can tame. Both layer new mechanics (piercing weapons, kinetic knockback, context-switching AI) onto familiar territory.
